What is Acne ?

Acne is a common skin condition that primarily affects the hair follicles and oil glands of the skin. It occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and sometimes bacteria. Acne can manifest as pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, cysts, or nodules, and typically appears on the face, neck, chest, back, and shoulders, where sebaceous (oil) glands are most concentrated.

Types of Acne

  • Comedonal Acne

This type of acne includes blackheads and whiteheads and occurs when hair follicles get clogged with oil and dead skin cells. There is little to no inflammation in comedonal acne.

  • Inflammatory Acne

This type includes papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts and occurs when a blocked pore becomes inflamed or infected, leading to red, swollen, and painful bumps on the skin.

  • Cystic Acne

Cystic acne is a severe form of inflammatory acne characterized by deep, painful, pus-filled cysts. If not treated properly, these cysts can become large and leave scars.

  • Acne Vulgaris

The most common type of acne, acne vulgaris affects many teenagers and young adults and typically includes a combination of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and cysts.

  • Hormonal Acne

Hormonal changes can lead to acne outbreaks, especially in teenagers and women. It often occurs around the jawline, chin, and neck and is most commonly associated with puberty, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or birth control use.

  • Acne Mechanica

This type is caused by friction or pressure on the skin, such as from tight clothing, helmets, or backpacks. It’s common in athletes and people who wear equipment that rubs against the skin.

  • Adult-Onset Acne

This type affects adults, typically women, and is often linked to hormonal fluctuations (like those during pregnancy, menstruation, or stress). It can appear as small breakouts around the chin, jawline, or cheeks.

Causes of Acne

Acne occurs due to a combination of multiple factors that lead to clogged hair follicles and an overgrowth of bacteria. The main causes include
